Record Enrollment Tops 6,000 Students

SCC reached an important milestone Fall semester, with a record enrollment of over 6000 students. The record enrollment was a result of a higher percentage of returning students and a 40+% increase in online enrollment. Faculty and staff made phone calls to encourage students enrolled in previous semesters to return to college for fall semester, which drove the increase. The increase in online enrollment was a direct result of faculty opening more online classes in nearly all programs. The record-breaking enrollment contributes to the College's strategic goals of student access and student success, and I thank faculty and staff for this important achievement.

Open House SuccessSCC Central Campus sign

SCC's second Open House event on Tuesday, Oct. 18th was another big success, with more than 310 attendees, including 129 prospective students. Special thanks to Reggie Willburn and Luke Black for continuously improving this signature event to welcome the community to our beautiful campus. Thank you to all the dedicated faculty, staff and students who welcomed our visitors, provided information and tours and showcased our classrooms and laboratories.

Annual Thanksgiving Luncheon for Elected Officials

We hosted the third annual Thanksgiving Luncheon for elected officials on campus on Thursday, November 10, 2011. Guests included state, county and city elected officials. The goal of the event is to thank our elected officials for their support of our students and to update them on what's happening at our community college. This year, we emphasized the need for continuing Lottery Tuition Assistance (LTA) to assist our students with paying for college. Dr. Cox discussed new academic programs and initiatives and Henry Giles provided a Downtown Campus update. Students Chanda Davis, Dee Browning and Josh Wheeler joined us for lunch and talked about their personal experiences at SCC, which helped reinforce to our elected officials and all of us the value of our academic mission.

United Way and Foundation Reach Out Campaign Update

Executive Director of Advancement Sam Hook reports that with faculty and staff donations through United Way and the Foundation's Reach Out Campaign now total $15,127, with 103 donors giving an average give of $146.86. "We have almost doubled the $8,000 given to the Foundation last year," Sam said proudly, adding that, "I think we can double it. We are mighty close!"

The United Way campaign is well underway and we still need your support. Don't forget that your United Way contribution can be designated for the SCC Foundation, which will also help the Foundation's faculty/staff campaign. Click on United Way Donation Form and SCC Foundation designation form to participate if you haven't already done so.

The Foundation Board, Sam and I thank faculty and staff for giving to this campaign to benefit our students.

Chili Cookoff and Cupcake Wars in Honor of Veterans' Day

In honor of Veterans Day on November 11, Chef and Culinary Department Chair Dawn Larrieu and her culinary students held SCC's first Chili Cook-Off and Cupcake Wars, a fundraising activity for the culinary department. An Air Force reservist, Chef Larrieu wore her cammies and challenged faculty and staff to share their chili and cupcake entries with professional judges and welcomed faculty and staff and guest judges to sample and vote for favorites. Official chili judges included chefs and members of Chef Larrieu's reserve platoon who sampled everything from traditional chili to "gator" chili, venison chili and BBQ chili. The winner of the cook-off was Katie Conrad. John Hoyle won second place, and "Gator" Newman was third.

The cupcake wars were a sweet surprise won by Jennifer Washburn, with Berta Hopkins a close 2nd. Congratulations to the Culinary Department and to the winners for a successful and tasteful event.

New Television Spot

The Marketing Department is receiving rave reviews on the new television advertising campaign, which talks about our technology programs. The campaign reflects the recommendations made by Noel-Levitz, the national consulting firm specializing in enrollment management.

Spring Enrollment

We have begun registering students for Spring semester. Thus far, we have registered twice the number of new students that we registered last year, which is evidence that our enhanced marketing and recruiting efforts are working. Our faculty and staff are beginning to implement the successful strategies used in Fall semester, which resulted in an increase in returning students. The combination of effective access and success strategies implemented by faculty and staff across campus will help us to achieve our strategic goals of increasing college access and improving student success and completion.
